I would also recommend that you read the post Citations: The Way to Avoid Plagiarism.

In this post, we will look at the formal way to cite YouTube videos. Highlighted in the image below is the information that will be used in the APA style citation for YouTube videos.

Citing a YouTube Video Using the APA Style

As mentioned in the posts earlier, every APA style citation has two parts:

  • In-text citation
  • References list entry

Format for In-text Citations

A brief in-text citation is included in the body of your content at the point where the referenced content is used to credit the author(s). It is preferable to use parenthetical form of an in-text citation in the format:

(Name of Uploader, Year of Publishing, Optional Timestamp)

  • When the uploader is a person, use just the last name and when the uploader is an organisation, use the name that appears on the YouTube channel.
  • The timestamp is optional and can include just the timestamp of the point at which the content you referenced starts in the video or a range shown as the start–end time of the referenced content.

For example:

A team at MIT has used components such as manual resuscitators and windshield wiper motors to design a cost-effective and easy-to-make emergency ventilator (Wired, 2020, 0:15–0:25).

Format for Full Citations in the References List

Full details of the source in the References list that appears as a separate section at the end of the document in the general format:

Name of the Video Uploader. (Year, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. YouTube. URL

For example:

Wired. (2020, May 27). How This DIY Ventilator Could Keep Covid-19 Patients Alive [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODwkveIe7Cc

We kept this post simple and focused on the APA style citation for YouTube videos. In the next post, we look at citing Infographics using the APA style.
