Instructional Design for an Online University

Curriculum Design and Development for Certification Programs for an iPaaS solution

The ibruk Consulting instructional design team designed and developed a curriculum for online certification programs for a vendor-agnostic iPaaS for Science. The solution facilitates quick and easy custom interfaces between industry-standard lab systems (instruments and applications) to facilitate seamless data exchange.

The Business Objectives

The client’s implementation team was handling all deployments. However, with the platform gaining popularity, the client wanted to:

  • expand their internal implementation team.
  • build a third-party partner network for implementation.
  • enable end-customer team members to build the custom interfaces they needed.

To maintain the quality of services, the client wanted to ensure that:

  • anyone involved in implementations was well-trained and certified.
  • they could create custom training paths for specific business requirements.
  • they could reach end-customers and implementation partners across the globe.

The Instructional Design Strategy

The ibruk Consulting instructional design team worked closely with the client team to design and develop an Online University that hosted comprehensive e-learning courses that enabled learners to gain proficiency in the client’s solutions.

Given the client’s stated business objectives, our instructional design team defined a modular e-learning curriculum where each module was complete in itself. The client can use individual modules as standalone training programs or integrate them into a more comprehensive certification program. The modular e-learning approach also enabled the client to build custom learning paths, as and when needed.

The instructional design strategy focused on ensuring that the certified learners are truly skilled professionals who can implement the solution efficiently and effectively.

Each module had:

  • A comprehensive explanation of a specific capability, its uses, and limitations.
  • A use case-based video tutorial to demonstrate the implementation of an interface.
  • Assessments; both formative assessments in the form of small quizzes at relevant points in the instruction and summative assessments as a comprehensive quiz at the end of the module.

To ensure accessibility and to cater to various learning styles, we used text, infographics, video, and audio to present the content. In addition, the instructional design team devised both formative (end-of-lesson spot check) and summative assessments (end-of-module quiz) such that that learners could proceed to the next stage only when they scored 80% or more. Our team designed the quiz questions to test both conceptual and application skills.

Scope of Instructional Design Services

Our team worked with the client’s training, business, and technical teams to:

  • Define business objectives
  • Define learner profiles
  • Define learning objectives
  • Design an instructional strategy
  • Create a sample module
  • Design the curriculum
  • Create the assessments
  • Create the courses

The Highlights

At the start of the project, the ibruk Consulting instructional design team was trained by the client on their solution and the team then worked independently on the solution to define and implement complex business use cases.

As a result, our team gained hands-on experience on the solution, and the proficiency was reflected in content that was enriched with practical insights and assessments. It also reduced dependency on the client’s technical team when the courses were being developed.

The Result

The client has launched an online University for their solution and offers certification programs for internal teams and external partners. With the success of this Phase 1, the ibruk Consulting team has now proposed use case-based simulations, both for learning and assessment, to ensure better learning outcomes.
